finishes strong at Deutsche Bank

NORTON, Mass. - About the only thing fun for Jason Day was being atop the leaderboard in the Deutsche Bank Championship.

One day after he opened with a 63 in conditions so calm he might as well have been playing indoors, Day found out quickly what he was up against Saturday in tree-shaking wind on the TPC at Boston.

He hit a tee shot down the middle and found it in the right rough.

He aimed his 9-iron 10 yards left of his target and saw it fly over the green.

Day got away with it by chipping in for birdie on his way to a 4-under 67 to share the lead with Brandt Snedeker, the second straight week the 22-year-old Australian has been a 36-hole leader in the FedEx Cup playoffs.

"It was a little tougher out there today," Day said.

Martin Kaymer won his first major in a playoff Sunday at a PGA Championship that will be remembered as much for the player who finished fifth.

The final stroke of this most bizarre major was Kaymer tapping in from 2 feet to win a three-hole playoff over Bubba Watson.

Equally significant was the 4-iron that Dustin Johnson gently placed in the sand behind his ball on the final hole of regulation at Whistling Straits, unaware that he was in one of more than 1,000 bunkers that litter this lunarlike landscape.

Johnson had a one-shot lead playing the 18th hole when he drove it well right into a tiny patch of sand where the gallery had been walking all week. He grounded his club, thinking it was grass that had been killed under a week's worth of foot traffic.

SOUTHPORT, England - Yani Tseng of Taiwan made a 6-foot putt on the 18th hole Sunday to win the Women's British Open by one stroke over Katherine Hull of Australia.

It was the 21-year-old Tseng's third major title and second of the year to go along with the Kraft Nabisco. She has four LPGA victories overall, having won 2008 LPGA Championship and 2009 Corning Classic.

Hull came into the round trailing by four strokes but trailed by just one heading into the 18th.

Whispering Pines Golf Club played host to the 2010 Men's Big 12 Championship April 24-26, and the depth of talent and great golf didn't disappoint those lucky enough to watch these players. Although the race seemed tight early on during the grueling 36-hole day on Friday, Oklahoma State showed everyone why they have won 5 of the last 6 Big 12 Championships. OSU had 4 players in the top 7, including Peter Uihlein, Sean Einhaus, Morgan Hoffman and Kevin Tway.

With the total average score for the week at 74.37, the course played slightly more difficult on Sunday then during the first 2 rounds on Friday.based in part on the dryer, firmer conditions, as well as a slight increase in wind, however this didn't curtail the OSU players as they finished Sunday with 4 of their 5 players at par or better.

The Aggies continued their good play by finishing alone at second, led by their number one player (and recent Spirit Men's Team Champion) Andrea Pavan. Pavan was also recently named to the Palmer Cup Team, the international collegiate event played annually between college players from the US and Great Britain & Ireland.

The WHGA and Whispering Pines were once again proud to showcase the number-1 venue in the state of Texas to a truly talented group of golfers playing in a showcase collegiate championship.

Houston, Texas - The Spirit International Amateur Golf Championship played at Whispering Pines Golf Club, November 4-7, 2009 will once again feature the world's best amateur men and women golfers from 20 participating countries.

All country teams were invited based on their combined final results of the men's and women's competition at the 2008 World Amateur Team Championships. Sweden won the women's competition and Scotland won the men's competition in Australia last October.
