England captures second consecutive International Team Gold Medal
The fourth edition of The Spirit International Amateur Golf Championship held October 21 -27 was action packed from start to finish.
With 77 National Amateur Champions competing for pride and honor from the 24 participating countries, The Spirit proved again that the stars of tomorrow are shining bright.
During the final 9 holes of the 72 hole four ball competition it came down to a three country team duel between Korea, England and the United States. Each country took their turn atop the leaderboard during the final round. However, it was England’s dynamic duo men’s team, Gary Boyd and Daniel Willett (27 under par) who carded six birdies over the final nine that sealed the victory for Team England.
Combined with a steady effort by the English women’s team of Elizabeth Bennett and Naomi Edwards (5 under par), it proved to be enough to capture a second consecutive International Team Gold Medal. Two strokes back were International Team co-Silver medalist Korea and United States. France took home the Bronze medal. Additional Gold Medal winners were the following international players:
Women’s Team: Soo-Jin Kim/Sei-Young Kim - Korea Men’s Team: Gary Boyd and Daniel Willett - England Woman Individual: Soo-Jin Kim – Korea Men Individual: Daniel Willett – England
Daniel Willett became the third player to win three Gold medals in one Spirit. The other two Spirit players were Lorena Ochoa (2001) and Paula Creamer (2003).
The Spirit is a biennial event that alternates years with the World Amateur Team Championships. The host organizations for The Spirit are the World Health & Golf Association and the Texas Golf Association, a USGA regional golf association.
